[g1-hackers] force OTA update to perform custom update?

I have previously seen using OTA update being used to force upgrade to 
custom firmware ( http://stefans.datenbruch.de/lafonera/#kolofonium ). 
Is there a way to trick g1 into updating to a custom firmware. Since I 
do not have one I can't really do anything, but if we trick G1 to go to 
another location ( using a custom DNS server ) and download the firmware 
would it work??
