[g1-hackers] How do you manually uninstall an app?

Hello,
I've run into a problem that I believe is caused by having a different
version of an app in /data/app that was installed previously and had
database set up for and all(I made booboo).
I go to install the app and it says "Insufficient storage space available",
then if I try again it says "Could not delete old application". So I was
wondering if anyone knew how to completely uninstall something manually?
I've seen remnants of the app around via grep but didn't want to mess with
stuff too much.
If I reboot then the next time I try to install it says insufficient space
then could not delete on the next try again.
Also /data/app is a symlink to a folder on the ext2 filesystem on the sd
card.
You guys are cool so I figured I'd ask here :)
any help appreciated thx
