Festival Lite play option does not work

when using the flite command, using the default or explicit play option does not work. This option is supposed to direct the output to the audio out (headphones), however it does not do so. I did discover that using the "play" command from "erica's utilities" it is possible to do a two step process to create then play the audio file.
