Hi, I just wanted to install OpenNTPD and use the ntpd-service ... I cannot start the service (as root via ssh), because it claims that the user "_ntp" is unknown:

iPhone:~ root# ntpd
ntpd: unknown user _ntp

Maybe that user just needs to be created on install or something like that.

I'm trying to use it in client mode only too -- it still complains about the missing uid... are you saying you actually have it running? I'm keen on getting this working because the AT&T time server seems to be off by about 10sec (and the time differs depending on whether I'm on 2G or 3G mode).

I believe the difference between server and client mode is simply in whether or not "listen" is set in ntpd.conf.

I have the same issue with openntp - even if i create a user called '_ntp' by editing '/etc/group' and '/etc/passwd' it does not work, i get the exact same output. Maybe the user-lookup does not work?

Anyone got any ideas? Am really tired of having a clock that's wrong all the time (O2 don't broadcast the time signal and iTunes doesn't sync times- bah).

P.S. Anyone know if running the ntpd will prevent the iPhone from going into deep sleep? I'd rather it just ran once a day and then quit.

All -- I got ntpd to run... turns out that you have to edit /etc/master.passwd, not /etc/passwd. I had not noticed this file before, but when I added "_ntp:*:83:83::0:0:NTP Daemon:/var/empty:/usr/bin/false" I was able to run ntpd.

As for running in the background, I've not been able to understand the pattern of how this works, but it seems like background processes that I have running eventually get killed off. If I run ssh with a tunnel through a WiFi? connection and I'm plugged into AC power, then the ssh process persists; if I do the same over WiFi? and I do not have AC power, it gets killed (even with the "insomnia" app running); if I do the same over 3G or Edge, I've been able to get it to persist, and I'm willing to bet that it does not go into a power-saving deep sleep (which is basically the point of the last question).

Hope this helps. Now if I can start to understand where the startup scripts are on this thing, so that I can plug in ntpd to start automatically... (which I may have to change if it drains the battery too much)

I forgot to add that the choice of uid/gid 83 is a poor one, because it appears that gid 83 is already in use in the /etc/group file. I did not do anything to reconcile this, but the next step would be understanding how the gids are allocated in /etc/group (some aspect of APT?) so that a new gid that I choose does not get re-used.

Then if I watch long enough, it seems to force a drift to about 0.8sec behind the real time and holds it there pretty much for the next day or two, until I stop it. If the time is less than 180sec off, then of course ntpd does nothing special to nail the time.

I'd be willing to poke at the source for the reason for this drift problem and also try to understand how to fix the packaging problem that is probably the real cause of this ticket in the first place.

Also, my battery life is impacted when I use this.

Here's a wish list of items:

1) fix the packaging problem so that the user "_ntp" gets created on install 2) get to the bottom of the reason for the 0.8sec offset (on my phone anyway) 3) look at making the iPhone version use longer delays than what the algorithm calls for today (delay for recheck depends on the amount of drift detected at each check -- so the checks get successively farther apart) 4) WHY NOT? it would be nice if we were able to somehow use the GPS inside the iPhone for a time reference... that would be more accurate than anything else!! Unfortunately, keeping GPS off is another way that the battery life has to be preserved
